LightCraft Guide – Free Lightroom Replacement
LightCraft is ArtCraft's free Lightroom replacement for photo organizing and editing. What works today, what's catching up, and who it's for.
LightCraft is ArtCraft's free Lightroom replacement — a photo manager and editor for organizing libraries and developing raw-style photos. It is in early-to-mid development: cataloging and basic adjustments work now, while advanced features are still catching up. This guide covers the current state and who it is for.
What LightCraft is
LightCraft belongs to the ArtCraft suite — seven free, open-source Adobe replacements vibe-coded by Brandon Thomas (storytold) with Claude Opus 5.5 agents, written in Rust, released September 30, 2026, free forever under MIT/Apache licenses.
What works today
- Photo organization: importing, browsing, and organizing photo libraries into collections works.
- Basic adjustments: exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, white balance, and saturation — the core develop sliders — are functional.
- Cropping and straightening: standard framing tools are in place.
- Batch basics: applying the same adjustments across multiple photos covers the essential workflow speedup.
What is still catching up
The gaps that matter: full raw support across camera models, advanced local adjustments (brushes, gradients, AI masks), lens corrections, and the polished catalog features Lightroom users rely on for tens of thousands of photos. Hobbyist photographers with modest libraries can use LightCraft today. Wedding and event photographers with huge catalogs and deadline pressure should wait — or run it alongside Lightroom on non-critical work to watch it mature.
LightCraft vs Lightroom
Lightroom costs around $12/month for the photography plan — roughly $144 a year, forever, and your edits live inside Adobe's ecosystem. LightCraft is $0 and your files stay yours. Lightroom is still the far more complete tool. But photo editing fundamentals do not change, and every month LightCraft's open-source development closes the distance.
Tips for trying it now
Import a small test library first, not your entire archive. Learn the basic adjustment workflow on JPEGs before trusting it with important raw files. Keep your originals backed up separately — standard practice with any young software. Download free from getartcraft.com/apps.
Frequently asked questions
Does LightCraft support my camera's raw files?
Raw support is expanding but does not yet cover every camera model. Check the current build with your own files before relying on it.
Can I migrate my Lightroom catalog?
Not directly — catalog migration from Lightroom is not currently supported. Treat LightCraft as a fresh start, not a migration target, for now.
Is it better than other free options?
Darktable and RawTherapee are mature free raw editors worth knowing. LightCraft's advantage is its modern codebase and rapid AI-assisted development pace — and its place in the wider ArtCraft suite alongside PhotoCraft for pixel editing.
